Chapter 21

Judging by Gabe’s speedy exit on Saturday afternoon and the fact that he still hadn’t returned home by the time she’d gone to bed on Sunday night, Caitlyn guessed he was regretting what had happened between them almost as much as she was. Although she suspected their reasons were very different.

Every time she thought about how she’d thrown herself at him, grinding herself against his dick like some bitch in heat, she burned with mortification. It was like when you drunkenly made out with a work colleague at your company’s Christmas party, then spent the rest of the Christmas holidays concocting all sorts of ridiculous excuses, like it wasn’t you, it was your identical twin sister. Or you’d had some bizarre reaction to the new medication you were taking.

Except in Caitlyn’s case, it hadn’t been a colleague, and it had been her boss and it wasn’t just her tongue that had been in his mouth. Plus, there was no alcohol or medical reaction to blame for her behaviour.

Obviously, the realisation of how low he’d sunk by coping a quick feel with the hired help, had sent him out in search of some gorgeous supermodel to bed to wash away his shame.

He’d probably only reciprocated out of a sense of obligation, anyway. The thought only made it worse.

But unless someone had invented a time machine in the last forty-eight hours that enabled her to go back in time and change what had happened, she had two choices. To quit her job, or carry on as if nothing had happened. The decision was a no brainer. She needed this job. Plan B it is then.

“I’m going to be late,” Ava said in a whiney voice, as Caitlyn circled the car park for the second time looking for a free space. “There,” Ava shouted, pointing to a car reversing out from one of the bays. Caitlyn flicked on her hazard lights and waited for the car to finish reversing and pull away. Ava tutted and huffed out a breath. “Why is he taking so long?” She twisted in her seat, her head straining to look behind her. “They’ll start without me.”

“I’m sure they won’t,” Caitlyn replied, returning the wave from the driver as they drove off.

Caitlyn reversed into the space, checking her mirrors to make sure she was straight. She’d barely turned off the engine and gathered up her bag before Ava jumped out, racing across the grass verge that bordered the carpark towards her friends.

Dropping her car keys and phone inside her bag, Caitlyn held up her hand to Joan and waved. Her daughter, Macy, and Ava had become good friends since Ava had joined the team and her husband, George, was the mechanic whose garage was providing Daphne with some much-needed TLC.

Joan and George had been high school sweethearts, but unlike Caitlyn’s fairy
